How to find a JEE mentor online (without getting scammed)
Anyone can call themselves a "JEE mentor" on Instagram. Here is how to find a real one, what a genuine call should cover, and the red flags that tell you to walk away.
1. Verify they actually cracked it
A mentor is only useful if they have walked the road. Ask directly: which exam year, what rank range, which IIT or NIT and branch. A real IITian or NITian answers instantly and specifically. Vague "I mentor hundreds of students" talk with no personal result is the first red flag.
2. Know what a good call covers
A strong mentorship call is about your preparation, not a generic pep talk. It should get into:
- Where your marks are actually leaking (concepts, silly mistakes, or time)
- Whether your timetable is realistic and how to fix it
- A revision system so you stop forgetting what you learned
- A clear plan for the next few weeks, and the final months
If you understand what to do differently by the end of the call, it worked. See JEE mentor vs coaching for why this is different from more classes.
3. Never pay before the call
This is the biggest one. Plenty of "mentorship" services take your money upfront and disappear or deliver a scripted 10-minute chat. The safe model is simple: pay only after a completed call. If the mentor does not show, you are not charged. That single rule filters out most scams.
4. Watch for these red flags
- Payment demanded upfront with no refund path
- No verifiable rank, year, or institute
- Promises of guaranteed rank or selection (nobody can promise that)
- The "mentor" is really just a doubt-solving chatbot in disguise
5. Ask what happens after the call
One call creates clarity; staying on track is the hard part. Ask whether there is any follow-up support. At JEE2U, Plus and Pro packs include JEE2U AI, a personal AI mentor for day-to-day guidance after your call. It is deliberately a strategy companion, not a doubt-solving tool.
